Research on the Programmes “An Instrument for Every Child“
| Calls: | 30.04.2008 |
| Duration of funding: | 2008 - 2013 |
| Projects: | 12 research projects |
1. Objectives of the funding measure
The research programme is designed to elaborate and deliver scientific insights related to the two projects titled "An Instrument for Every Child" ("Jedem Kind ein Instrument" (JeKi)), carried out in Hamburg and North-Rhine Westphalia in the area of Essen and the Ruhr Area. Both of the projects aim to familiarise children with music by providing them with a musical instrument at the primary school stage, acquainting them with a joy of making music actively and thus opening cultural horizons to them and eventually to their families in a special, sustainable manner.The JeKi projects in NRW and Hamburg are subject to high investment by the federal government and the respective federal states, thus research is required as to how different objectives of the projects are achieved concerning different questions. The research programme also aims to further develop and empirically validate existing research findings and research hypotheses regarding instructions in music and musical instruments on the basis of a very substantial random sample.
The funding measure of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports empirical research within the following areas of priority:
- Research on the process analysis throughout the implementation of both JeKi projects;
- Research regarding different strategies of staff and professionalism, lesson arrangement (including opportunities for practice) and lesson characteristics;
- Research on effects of musical instruction on the families concerned, respective classes and schools, contacts to the local community and the town`s interest in the schools, participation in cultural contests and events;
- Research (to a lesser degree) on the connection between musical activity and structural and functional brain activities.
